The Saints

‘Saint Helenaians’ just doesn’t work, so they call themselves ‘The Saints’ and have made us wonderfully welcome. Merel has been spending nights ashore at The Consulate, a wonderful shabby-chic establishment where she bakes scones and sticky-date puddings for them in exchange for a night on the couch.

We are both in love with Saint Helena and fantasising how to immigrate here. It is an island out of place and time with a population of exceptionally friendly people of decidedly mixed racial backgrounds and unusual thoughtfulness. You cannot walk down the main street without strangers greeting you at every corner, and the streets here have an incredible number of corners!

Today (Friday) we extended our stay till next Wednesday, when we expect to leave for Fernando de Noronha, another Atlantic island, but belonging to Brazil, and thus with a different vibe altogether.
